Description

Sold without Reserve

Flemish School, circa 1660-75

Portrait of a young nobleman, possibly Philippe-François Wouters

oil on canvas

canvas: 32 ¾ by 26 in.; 83.1 by 66 cm.

framed: 40 ⅝ by 34 in. 103.1 by 86.3 cm.

This charming portrait is most likely of a young Philippe-François Wouters, who would later become Lord of Vinderhoute, Meerendre, Belseele, Ecke and Volckeghem in Flanders in the late-17th Century. The coat of arms in the upper left is that of the Wouters family. Even though the artist has not been identified, the dress, coiffure and approximate age of the sitter date the painting to circa 1660-75.
